I can’t help it. I tried not to but I did it again. It’s like slowing down on the highway as you pass a car wreck just to rubberneck.
You shouldn’t but you tell yourself you have good reasons: I watched the television show Botched on E! again with my share of morbid curiosity. Every story is so heartbreaking and I am fascinated by the amount of psychology running below the surface. Rubbernecking for entertainment. Hmmm…
I was most touched by Michelle’s story in this week’s episode, 106. She was the woman who had been struck in the face by a horse when she was young and was badly disfigured. Michelle could have used hypnosis before the accident and most definitely could use some now.
Referring to her thoughts after the accident, she states, “The only thing I had going for me was my looks and now that was gone.” She goes on to say she then had nothing.
She talks about overhearing her doctors say, after the accident: “What a shame, she was pretty and never will be again.”
Why her only sense of self worth was tied to her looks we don’t know. But she spent her whole life after the accident trying to compensate for that loss of physical beauty. And who told her doctors it was okay to say stuff like that?
Brilliance in medicine, lack of social skills. Ugh!
I would love to have Michelle in my care. I would love to hypnotize her to look in the mirror and see only the beauty of her own soul, it’s strength, it’s recovery, it’s preciousness.
All the surgery in the world can’t give her that.
I know hypnosis can.
